TOURISM KINGSTON

People, Place, Story

Overview

From 2015 to 2024, Untold made films with Tourism Kingston and its agency of record, Alphabet Creative. Fourteen vignettes about the city's makers, two brand films, a documentary about Kingston's brewing history, a pandemic response, and a food campaign. The first brand film was filmed across four seasons. The second took the brand to its next stage and won a Silver Dolphin at Cannes.

Every one of them was cast with people who live in Kingston. Over ten years, that became the strategy: build a destination around its residents, and keep telling their stories long enough that visitors feel they know the place before they arrive.

The Challenge

Kingston is one of the oldest cities in Canada, and its tourism identity had always run on heritage: historic forts, limestone architecture, a military past, and a tagline about where "history and innovation thrive." That reached visitors who came for history. It said very little to the creative class, young professionals, and experiential travellers the city needed next.

Alphabet Creative built the infrastructure for a new brand that positioned Kingston as artistic, expressive, and progressive, under a new tagline: Fresh Made Daily. A brand like that needed proof on screen, in the form of the potters, brewers, chefs, and artisans actually making things in the city. That's where Makers of Kingston came from, along with the highly stylized look, made with old-school camera techniques, that set the visual approach for the work that followed.

More briefs came over the years: put the whole city into a brand anthem, stay present through a year when nobody could travel, bring diners back to local restaurants, and take the brand to its next stage with a second brand film. Each one asked for something different. All of them needed Kingston to feel like a place full of people worth meeting.

Our Approach

The relationship began in 2015 with Makers of Kingston, fourteen vignettes about the people behind Fresh Made Daily, and ran for nearly a decade.

Over the years, Tourism Kingston took the lead on the creative relationship. Every project became a three-way collaboration between their vision, Alphabet's direction, and our storytelling, built on a shared belief that the city had more stories to tell and that each film should go further than the last.

Four ideas carried through all of it.

Residents are the cast.

Every film was cast in Kingston. Tourism Kingston holds open casting calls for its campaigns, so the people on screen are the people a visitor would actually meet: a pottery class, a couple walking the trails with their dog, a crowd at a summer festival. The city introduces itself through them.

The city makes its own films.

Poets, artists, makers, chefs, composers, and sound studios from Kingston and Frontenac County shaped the work alongside the people on camera. Most of our team lived in the city through those years, so every project came to life through the people and place we experience, and were built with people we knew.

Follow the story where it goes.

History is Brewing began as a film about the city's breweries. The reporting led back to the 1790s, when Rideau Street was called Brewery Street, and the film became a story about where Kingston comes from.

Stay present when it's hard.

When the pandemic closed the city in 2020, Tourism Kingston kept showing up for the people who live there. Together at Home was built for residents first, and it went on to reach 3.7 million people in a year when almost nobody travelled.

Campaign films built on local voices.

Makers and entrepreneurs as tourism stories. The Makers of Kingston series positioned the city's emerging creative economy (artisans, chefs, and early breweries) as a reason to visit. These aren't profiles. They're stories about the kind of people who choose a city like Kingston and what that choice says about the place.

2019 - 2022

History is Brewing

Kingston has been brewing beer since the 1790s. Rideau Street was once called Brewery Street, and soldiers at Fort Henry drew a weekly beer ration. By the 1850s, the railways were bringing in beer from Toronto and Montreal, and the city's own brewing faded.

History is Brewing tells that story through the nine breweries and one cidery working in Kingston in 2021, and the people who brought brewing back to the city. What started as a film about craft beer turned into a film about the city's identity, running from its industrial past to its creative present.

Brewery Breakout Films

As part of this film, we also created a breakout film for each individual brewery. This created both a breadth of content for Tourism Kingston, but also served as a directory for all of the breweries to have their stories and environments captured in a way that visitors could experience before they came.

Together at Home - Covid Response

2019 - 2022

Together at Home

When the pandemic closed Kingston, we spent a year crafting varioius series to keep the city connected.

The initial community support film set to a Tragically Hip song. A collaborative national anthem recorded live in each location for Canada Day, performed by Kingston musicians including Paul Langlois and Miss Emily. A run of holiday workshops people could join from home.

This is the kind of work that comes together when both parties trust eachother to create great work that matters. While creatively some of the more simple storytelling, it's some of the most impactful work we did together. Tourism metrics fell to the wayside, and we worked together to support our community.

Rediscover Delicious - Kingstonlicious

A commercial built around Kingston's restaurants and the people who run them, made to get people out of the house and back to local tables.

Behind the Stories

Most of our team called Kingston home through these years. The people in these films were often neighbours, collaborators, and friends long before they were on camera, and the films carry that familiarity. Audiences can tell when the people on screen trust the people behind it.

Tourism Kingston kept coming back to one idea for ten years: the people who live in the city are the best reason to visit it. Each film built on the trust of the one before, until a poet, a composer, and four groups of residents could take a brand film to Cannes.

Taken together, the Kingston body of work shows what happens when a client commits to storytelling as a strategy, not a tactic, and when the creative partner strives for unique new ways to uncover the deeper stories beneath the surface.
